Safe Driver Education is concerned about driving in the rainy season since rain can impair your vision and cause slippery roads. We have put together a few suggestions for driving safely in the rainy season:
1. Check and prepare your car before leaving.
2. Turn on your headlights or fog lamps in heavy rain.
3. Be more careful during the first 5 minutes of rain because the road can be very slippery.
4. Drive at an appropriate speed and keep twice as much distance between you and the car in front as you do when it is not raining. (6 to 8 seconds)
5. Avoid abrupt and unnecessary braking.
6. Watch for standing water on the road and slow down when driving through it.
7. When facing a road with standing water, observe the car in front of you to evaluate the depth of the water.
8. When driving through a flooded road, turn off the air conditioner and use a lower gear (L or 1) to keep water out of the engine.
9. After driving through standing water, tap the brakes gently several times to dry the brake lining. If you need to park the car in a wet area, avoid using the handbrake to prevent it from getting stuck.
10. If it rains so hard that you cannot see the road 10 feet in front of you, find a safe place to park your car before going further.
