Supporting safety and reducing accidents in Thailand

Measures for promoting safety and reducing accidents in Thailand
For over 20 years, the authorities responsible for promoting safety and reducing accidents in Thailand have been very strict on safety equipment and have issued a law restricting drunk driving; however, the results have not been satisfactory.

The suggested following measures aim to reduce the number of accidents and deaths:

The first measure: Promoting any procedure that increases the ability to see clearly.

The second measure: Having a vigorous driver safety assessment program.

The third measure: Having a company driving-related jobs program with qualifications and vehicle inspections.

The fourth measure:  Completing a safety education course for novice drivers and developing a strict driving licensing program.

The fifth measure: Having an effective vehicle inspection program.

The first measure: Promoting any procedure that increases the ability to see clearly.
This measure focuses on the driver’s ability to see and the driver’s attitude toward the importance of vision. The key is to understand the importance of seeing others and others seeing you. A visual acuity test is the basic necessity.

  • Opaque items must be removed from the windshield area.
  • Windows and the area around the windows should be clean.
  • Helmets should be designed for clear vision.
  • Medication and alcoholic beverages should be avoided as they can affect the ability to see.
  • Using day time headlights to increase visibility.
  • Giving signals to pedestrians and bikers.
  • Assure proper visual range of bus and truck drivers by adjusting seating and clearing windows of clutter.

The second measure: Having a vigorous driver safety assessment program
This measure focuses on the attitude of drivers toward safety, which can be the opposite of their knowledge of traffic regulations.

  • Understanding the importance of self-assessment and driving attitude.
  • Developing a polite driving culture.
  • Finding ways to control emotions while driving.
  • Changing the idea that higher speed equals quality driving.
  • Using the assessment certificate for a future job.

The third measure: Having a company driving-related jobs program with qualifications and vehicle inspections
This measure focuses on persons whose jobs are relevant to driving company vehicles.

  • Supporting a training program for every company driver
  • Having a vehicle maintenance program.
  • Implementing an assessment and a driving test for the elderly and handicapped.
  • Developing special regulations and policies for driving company cars
  • Using “a will to get good jobs” as a motivation for safe driving.

The fourth measure: Completing a safety education course for novice drivers and developing a strict driving licensing program
It is the company’s responsibility to provide a safety training program for employees to get ready for obtaining a driving license.

Supporting safety education before issuing a driving liscense.

Using a program to issue graduated licensing permits for novice drivers. Graduated driver licensing systems (GDLS) are designed to provide new  HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Driving" \o "Driving" drivers of  HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motor_vehicles" \o "Motor vehicles" motor vehicles with driving experience and skills gradually over time in low-risk environments. There are typically three steps or stages through which new drivers pass. They begin by acquiring a  HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Learner%27s_permit" \o "Learner's permit" learner’s permit, progress to a restricted, provisional or probationary license, followed by receipt of a full driver's license. Graduated drivers' licensing generally restricts nighttime, expressway, and unsupervised driving during initial stages, but lifts these restrictions with time and further testing of the individual, eventually concluding with the individual attaining a full driver's license.

  • Improving drivers’ attitude toward the safety.
  • Understanding the rules concerning training for improvement of rule violators.

The fifth measure: Having an effective vehicle inspection program
Some vehicle owners in Thailand modify their vehicles for a new style and more powerful engine without concern for the safety or engineering of the car. This measure focuses on proper vehicle maintenance for safety.

  • Vehicle owners and companies should be responsible for the safety inspection of vehicles.
  • Insurance companies should add a vehicle inspection to the annual registration requirement.
  • Regulations should be strictly applied to all modified vehicles.
  • Rules concerning tinted car windows should be enforced.

Conclusion
The objective of these measures is to allow program participants to spend less time and money attaining driving proficiency with support from their companies or organizations to achieve their driving goals
